Ultimately it depends on the type of job that you are taking and what system they are using to run the actual background check as the waiting time tends to vary.

For a thorough background check to be performed, results will need to be gathered from a number of different sources and so should be completed and returned back to the employer within one to three business days, depending on the amount of data being collected.

How long does a background check take?
The process may be lengthened when it comes to getting in touch with courts, previous employers and schools as these may take longer to respond or be rather difficult to contact. Results that are being gathered from sources such as these may take as long as a week to get back to the employer who requested them.

Another factor that may also increase the length of time it takes for a background check to come back is the type of check that is conducted. An employer can choose to have the employee's criminal history checked, have their education verified, check out their driving history and even their credit history.

The process can take a long time because there are quite a number of factors that are involved. Firstly, the prospective employee must submit to a background check by filling in a form which will include his name, social security number, date of birth, address and the names of previous employers.

All of this is to insure that the background check is conducted on the right person, especially if the prospective employee has quite a common name. Once all of the required paperwork has been correctly filled out, the employer will need to contact a respected background check company to carry out the procedure.

Using a reputable company will ensure that the employee does not become a victim of identity theft of fraud. Once the consent form has been sent off then the results will usually be returned within a week.

Four weeks in the USA for a criminal background check is unusually long. Most companies use a criminal background check firm, and results are returned in 72 hours to one week, on the average.

It could take long if the company is conducting their own reference check, but I would suggest you contact the hiring company and inquire as to what the specific delay regarding your background check might be.

Good luck!

I had to have a background check done and was sent to the local law enforcement building to get fingerprinted.

I was told it would take one and a half to two weeks to get the results back. It will be three weeks this Friday and I have still not heard anything. I have nothing on my record either.

I had an interview on Tuesday today is Friday.

They asked me to send my background check to them and I sent that on Tuesday the day of the interview.

They still have not checked my references and I have not heard anything back from them. Does it usually take that long, or does that mean I am not considered anymore for the position.

I was wondering the same question. I had two background checks done fifteen days ago. One  FBI and State of Ohio, because I live in Kentucky. I previously worked at a local detention center, and had a similar FBI check done there as well. I don't remember it taking this long.

It really depends what sort of "background check" we are talking about here...

In the UK, at least, something like CRB (Crimnal Records Bureau disclosure) checking can take a good few weeks (if you're going to be working with kids) and police/prison background checks can take quite a while as well. Do you have any more details on what sort of check we're talking about here? What's the role?
thanked the writer.

Its all depend on how many components employer want to check and also depend on location. Some candidate are located in remote areas so it take few days to verify some information. But nowadays technology also come into this kind of business so that its help to reduce time and give more accurate results. So usually it takes 15 days max to max for whole background screening.

If you have colorful history, it might take a while, and it depends in the location or where you are.

Modern technologies make it faster though, by email, fax or even by telephone, one can check on you. If it needed hard copy, they could just print it.

Same thing here, the employer said a soon as the "papers" come in then you're hired. Well, its been a week and he told me he would call me in 2 days. I don't know maybe they are lying to you but if they say your a def. Hire then you should ask them what the deal is.
