Going to Cosmetology School, full time, will take about 10 months before graduating. You then must go before the State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology to take and pass your 3 tests in order to receive a license. The tests are Theory, State Law, and then a practical (hands on). These usually take a full day to complete. It is law in every state to be licensed in order to practice Hairdressing.
As a Hairdresser Apprentice it generally takes about 2 years working and studying under the close supervision of a Licensed Cosmetologist. After completion, the state tests are required.
