The Secretary of Energy under the administration of President Jimmy Carter was James Rodney Schlesinger. He was in this office from January 1977 to July 1979; approximately two and a half years. Before this he had held the post of the Secretary of Defense from the year 1973 to the year 1975. This was in the administration of Gerald Ford.

Under President Nixon he was the Director of the Central Agency of 2nd of January 1973 to the 2nd of July 1973. He was dismissed from the position under Gerald Ford administration because of insubordination. He was also resented by those working under him at Langley to the extent that it was feared that his office might be vandalized.

James Schlesinger was born on the 15th of February 1929 to Rae and Julius Schlesinger. While his former parent was a Immigrant Russian Jew the latter was an Austrian Jew.
