That's the exact reason that I abhor zoos, large commercial aquariums and the circus, to name a few. Even putting injured animals in cages for the rest of their lives is cruel. Let nature take it's course, all animals need to eat.

Eh ... I don't really care, most of the time ... After all, *I* don't have any direct contact with them - and "out of sight, out of mind".
If you only knew the kind of treatment animals endure at the hands of human kind .. It would keep you awake for years to come. That's why it's important that we all speak up when we see crap like that happening .. THAT's why there was such a big stink a couple of weeks ago about Cecil the lion .. Outrageous treatment of animals in the wild and in capitivity .. Is unneccessary and unfair.
I haven't stepped foot in a zoo or aquarium for years .. Primarly because I know what goes on behind close doors .. The capture, the containment, the treatment for the sake of 'entertainment' makes me sick.
It is sick, I have 2 cats and night they sleep with me. I can tell when my girl cat gets in the bed the way she purrs by me cause she is comfortable with me and my boy cat took a nap with me. Animals are kinda like people except they don't talk. But they're just mature as we are. Like my cats .
