Alpha numeric KPH Skill stands for alpha numeric keystrokes per hour. This is a test, which can be taken, amongst other places, online. The test simply involves typing using both the letters and the numbers on a keyboard. Accuracy is measured and the test lasts for 10 minutes. The end result gives the typing speed per hour (kph) and also words per minute (wpm) to the user.

Employers use the alpha numeric kph skill test to monitor the accuracy and speed of job applicants to ascertain their suitability to the advertised posts. Words per minute (wpm) has been the standard form of testing typing speeds for many years and the average professional typist can reach a speed of between 50 and 70 words per minute.

Some more accomplished typists can reach up to 95 words per minute and some vacancies will require the typist to reach this speed, especially in the case of time-sensitive typing jobs. The average computer user can type 33 words per minute and in a recent study average computer users were divided into three groups according to their speed. The fastest group typed 40 words per minute, the moderate group typed 35 words per minute and the slowest group typed 23 words per minute.

People can generally type at a quicker speed if they are being transcribed to, or have the words they need in their head, whereas if they are copying the text, the process slows down considerably (up to 10 words per minute less on average). The fastest ever typing speed was achieved by a lady in Chicago called Stella Pajunas-Garnand in 1946. She typed 216 words per minute.
