A bathrobe is meant to be worn after a bath whereas a dressing gown is worn over nightwear. A dressing gown is the garment that is worn at night in the house. It comes in a variety of fabrics from silk to cotton. Dressing gowns come in a variety of colours. One can choose from a wide variety of patterns and designs- an especially popular ones are the ones styled as Japanese Kimonos.

A bathrobe is a loose garment made out of toweling material. It is usually worn after a bath. It is usually white in colour but can come in different shades. Women may prefer lighter coloured robes like pink, yellow, light blue of light green, whereas men may prefer black, navy blue, dark brown and so on. Americans call a dressing gown a bathrobe.

A bathrobe is worn when you're home sick and coughing up all kinds of yucky phlegm.  A dressing gown is worn as an accessory when you're entertaining a friend of the opposite (or same) sex.
