My Scottish mother always said if cows are lying down it was going to rain! When I say this my husband laughs at me! Has anyone else heard of this?

I found and read two different articles about that saying. One saying that it's an old wives tale and another that said scientists believe it could be true. I'll put both links here and you can have your husband read them. Maybe he won't laugh anymore !

Great article, Rooster, but you should have brought the image across. It was obviously a very wise cow -- a cow guru, in fact -- and one with the most superior expression on it's face I've ever seen. It's a face that says, "How could you doubt it?"

Absolutely. I grew up on a farm and cows laying down was always a sign that it was going to rain. We always fed the stock a little more quickly in the morning if they were laying down. Just trying to beat the rain.

I'm surprised that the cows in your area aren't laying down when you take a pee. Droughts suck.

That will happen if you don't wait a wee bit when you first post. Sometimes it lags a bit before it posts. Just click post once and you'll be fine.

The only person I've ever heard say it was Mrs Didge. It was commonly held to be true in her family. . When we drive through car country we invariably get into "weather" conversations about the cows and have decided that when some are standing and some are sitting it means scattered showers. The percentage of any given herd sitting also indicates the severity of the coming rain.
