Good luck! My dad's been a graphic designer for 18 years now. He went to the Arts Institute of Fort Lauder dale. He worked for Blue Seal Feeds animal food for 16 years, until a mother company bought them out and let go of everyone in dad's division. Ever since then, he's been applying to pretty much everywhere, but he's been looked past and younger, mostly girls got the job over him. Luckily he has freelance. Do you know what that is? You can have little jobs here and there that can pay you, but you don't really work for them permanently. He's struggled pretty bad but somehow we make ends meet.

If you're gonna apply to a good company, make sure they're gonna stay in business. Although freelance ins good, you don't get paid on a weekly basis, and you might not know when you'll get paid next.

Sorry to hear about your dad. But he appears to be a great dad since you all are making ends meet. It is also difficult I know when you have all the experience and are passed up for younger folks who are paid less. But he will make it in the end. You can count on that.

One of my daughters earned a degree in animation and graphic art / design. It was amazing. She landed a high paying job with a government contractor almost 30 days after graduation. But  after 18 months the contractor lost the contract and folded up. She wound up delivering pizza for almost two years. But while delivering pizza she made contacts within different companies who would hold onto her resume just in case and one finally paid off. She was back in the saddle with a more secure position and has been there for more than 8 years.

So I guess the answer to the original question is graphic design is a unique career that has its many ups and downs just like any other career. But its downs can last longer so be prepared at the outset.

Prepare to sell yourself. Before you are a graphic designer, which there are a dime a dozen, you are a salesman.

In order to sell yourself, you need a portfolio. In modern times this is called a website with all your creativity, heart, and soul put into it. Showing your full range of work with concepts and explanation of each one. You need a good presentation saying "This is all of me and I'm selling it to you".

Stock up on ramen noodles and get yourself a crockpot.

Pick up any sort of work you can. Even if it's advertisement for a mom and pop frozen yogurt shop in exchange for free yogurt. Pick up the scraps and build something with it. See what I did there?

The reality is that your chosen career isn't a pretty one. Give up now and pick something else while you can if you're not willing to put up with the struggles it entails. Or you can ignore me and continue on understanding what I just said. But don't come back years from now asking WHYYYYYYY? WHYYY IS MY LIFE SO? Good luck. =)
