It is very important for a team to be motivated. Whether it's a team of co-workers, a team of friends, or a sports team, motivation is one of the key factors which will help them towards success. There is lots of modern research which points to a vast number of indicators of motivation - certainly more than two!

One indication of motivation in a team is their commitment to a cause or a project. If a team of people is motivated, they should be willing to put in more hours than they need to, and to work harder than they need to. Of course, commitment is an abstract concept and means different things to different people, but generally speaking, if a team is committed they should be willing to give 110 per cent 25 hours a day, eight days a week - even under difficult circumstances. This commitment will allow the team to challenge themselves and progress, and should lead to high quality results.

Another indicator of motivation in a team is their persistence, or perseverance. If the team simply stops trying when they encounter a difficult problem, or they don't try to solve conflicts within the team if the conflicts are deep-set, then the team isn't motivated. In order to achieve results, a team needs to power through, devoting time and energy to the project or task at hand, even when it seems that no results are being obtained.

An additional indication of motivation within a team is the acceptance of responsibility. If members or the team are reluctant to accept responsibility for their actions when things go wrong, or if they try to pass the responsibility (or blame!) onto someone else, they are not motivated or dedicated to the cause of the team.  A motivated team member would accept responsibility when things go wrong, as it is only by doing so that solutions can be formulated to get back on track - the minor sacrifice of pride, or admitting you were wrong, will benefit the whole team.
