Myself, I think it's important to encourage students to develop in their own way. The best thing I think a teacher can do is set them an example of honesty and dedication, and above all encourage them to think clearly. One of the nicest things an ex-student ever said to me was "I question everything since your lessons." That's the kind of influence I would hope to have, anyway. Hope this helps.
