The Navy and the Army are both arms of the military service. The main difference is in their theatre of operations.

The Navy conducts its operations at sea and is principally a ship borne force whose main responsibility is the maritime security and interests of its national government. Navies do however operate land bases for training, radar and communications etc.. Integral to the modern navy are aircraft carriers. Navy pilots fly specially adapted fixed wing aircraft from carriers. They also fly helicopters in a variety of roles from land bases and ships for supply purposes, search and rescue, personnel transport and a variety of tactical and logistical purposes.

The Army, meanwhile, is concerned with all land based military activity, though they do operate limited numbers of small seagoing craft for landing troops on beach heads and for other short term limited roles. Armies do all the land based fighting but work closely with all arms of the military including the Navy and Air Force.
