Yes, but simply having a BSc in Computer Science will not get you a job.

  • What is the Merchant Navy?
It's the UK's commercial shipping industry and it's made up of shipping companies that own and manage a wide range of vessels. Operating around the world, the ships carrying the red ensign include some of the most prestigious cruisers across the globe, container ships carrying a variety of cargo, ferries which carry millions of people every year, tankers which distribute essential resources and specialised vessels used in, for example, the offshore oil industry.

  • Why would I want to join?
The most obvious reason is that you get to travel the world at someone else's expense. And unlike the other Navy, you don't tend to get shot at either. The job is challenging and rewarding and there is a lifetime of development opportunities. Plus, you get paid while you train.

  • So how do I sign up?
As mentioned before, your degree is not enough. To become a merchant seafarer you need specialist training. The good news though is that this takes place at sea, on board working vessels. At the end of it you will get professional seafaring certification as well as educational qualifications. As well as at sea, there is time in the classroom required. This takes place in specialist colleges and universities throughout the UK.

  • Are the courses expensive?
No because all programmes are sponsored. This means your course fees are paid and living costs and other allowances are provided.
