I disagree with your presumption. Both save lives. The farmer saves lives by feeding people. The doctor saves lives as his profession. Both are important in their own right.
Why is a doctor better than a farmer?
Neither has more intrinsic worth than the other. Both do vital work. Both are equally deserving of honour.
