First you graduate from a four-year university. Then you complete a four-year medical school.  Then you complete a five-year general surgery residency.  Then you complete a 13-year cardiovascular surgery residency.  Then you take your board exams.  If you pass, you're a cardiovascular (includes heart) surgeon starting at $300,000 per year in the USA.

I'm currently on the path of becoming a surgeon so here is what I have to go through
1. 4 yrs of college education
2. 4 yrs of med school (if you get in)
3. 4 yrs of surgical residency (hands on practice)

so you are talking about time, strong dedication, going to school for a very long time and lots red bulls.  But if you can make it, you'll be awarded with a rich lifestyle with at least 250.000$ starting pay, that's one of my main motive.

Good luck

Your need apoximately 7 years of college plus the hospital time, but there are some medical things you will be allowed to do on your way just talked with a young lady she has the title of Dr. But is not finish her education she told me she is in her 8th year but she could work in the emergency to treat small things such as I went for a sinus infection and of course being who Iam we talked and she talked of the papers she has to do, plus there was a full fledged Dr. Working there also in the event it was something she needed help with in fact there were three Drs there and who was licensed I don't know but I do know she was still a student....good luck and I conclude it depends on what field of practice you plan to go into....good luck

First, complete all the science/biology classes that are offered at your high school. Then, go to a four year college to get your basics. Finally, you need to go to a 8 year college that provides you with cardiovascular surgeries. If you complete all 12 years, you will be certified to be a cardiothoracic surgeon. Which includes the whole chest cavity including the heart!

Heart surgeons need to be highly qualified, skilled and dedicated. You would need the following qualifications to become a heart surgeon:
- If you are a high school student, you need to take science subjects and excel at them, especially Biology. Take the Medical College Admission Test and Apply for admission to a medical school in your senior year.
- After getting admission, you would have to complete the 3rd year rotations before choosing your specialization, Its better to do it in Cardiovascular Surgery.
- Give the appropriate exams and after completing your residency, pass the American Board of Thoracic Surgery examinations in order to become a heart surgeon.

If you are worried about wasting your life away becoming a heart surgeon it is not the path for you. When picking a profession you need not have any doubts about what it is you would like to become and if you are worried about how much time it will take to become a heart surgeon you are not passionate enough about it. Pick something else
