The community of students and professors will - or at least should - share the same five ideals and attributes as each other, regardless of where the learning community is based. These values are as follows:

  • Creativity

The responsibilities of being creative and inventive should be shared across all within the community. Everybody should have the opportunity to put forward their ideas and make suggestive and creative contributions to the rest of the community.

  • Support

The community should be prepared to support each other in all circumstances. This unity and support is more likely to help the community thrive by helping individuals through any problems or difficulties that they are experiencing.

  • Leadership

Ideally - there should not be one absolute leader of the community. The responsibility of leading the community should be shared with all of those within it. In that way everyone can be sure that the decisions that are made are something that the vast majority of people within the doctoral community are happy to accept the actions.

  • Practice

There is always a great deal of need for the practical application of theory. The community should be prepared to share all the opportunities for practicing both theory and the practical application of that theory. That way, each individual is receiving equal opportunity to put their skills to the test.

  • Vision

Everyone within the doctoral community should look to share the same vision of success. If everybody is wanting to go in the same general direction then there is bound to be increased unity and therefore effective learning within the community.
