I think considering he does not have a contract, then one week should be sufficient. That does of course assume he will get paid, if he clears this with his boss first, one week should be enough. I think he has to think of it as though he would want at least some notice himself.

Casual workers don't need to give any notice. Just give it to the boss in writing and walk out. If he doesnt pay you, ring wageline.
