The qualifications need to be a social worker will fall into two categories. One will be the actual educational and training needs and the other will be concerned with the type of person that is applying. There will be the need to be understanding and caring but also able to be strong enough to help the person with their problem.

While still at school it will be a good idea to volunteer as a helper for qualified social workers. This will go down well at the time of application but will not be the only issue. A good education is vital and in order to get a foot on the ladder there will need to have a Bachelors Degree in Social Work (BSW). As it is such an important job the industry make sure that people who want to work in the field are fully trained and also serious about what they want to do. No one can just do it for a while when they are in between jobs.

In certain places it will be a good idea to learn another language. Some areas have a high level of non English speaking inhabitants and research shows that in many cases they will need help. Having someone explain to them how to get a house or what they need to do with regards to their child's education and to do it in their own language will be a step in the right direction.

The college where the degree is taken should be accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. At present there are 430 B.S.W. Courses and there is the need to carry out 400 hundred hours plus of field work that is supervised.

A Levels in Health & Social Care and then you must go onto University to Study your BSc Social Work and at University you will be studying all the final qualifications you need in order to be a Social Worker.

Also remember that you have to under go a Police and National Check and if any type of Criminal Record is found then you dream of being a Social Worker is gone, even if the offence is done when you were young for something stupid like Drinking Disorder.

Good Luck,

Yes same but tbh this information above doesn't seem right. Plus the comment about being generally clever doesn't seem realistic at all. Its called learning what you need to know. Doesn't take a smart person to learn stuff.

As much as I agree that children do need help but so do families.

Plus don't about this being clever stuff. You will learn the stuff you need to know at uni :) .. So you still could be what you want to be .. :) don't let other opinions stop you (Y) xx

If you living in South Africa you should have matric exemption or grade 12 with exemption in order for a person to be admitted at university for a four years degree. But my advise to people who wants to enter social work profession you must be passionate about helping the community, be non judgemental because you come across different types of people and you must be willing to help at all times irrespective of what you will get in return, please let us not get into this field out of desperation!

You people that are putting social workers down are absolutely CRAZY and STUPID!!! I was taken away from my family and it was the best thing that ever happened to me! Most of the time it is for a GOOD reason that the kids are taken away! I am about to graduate high school, no one else in my biological family has ever done that and I wouldn't have either if I was still with them, I absolutely love the people at CPS, they helped me live a MUCH BETTER life than I would have where I was before. You obviously have no idea. And if the parents really care about their kids and they aren't doing anything wrong, they end up getting the kids back!

Use your money to get a better education. Most social workers don't get paid much. You definitely wont get rich as a social worker.cities and states don't pay much to their employees. Your choice but make sure your partner is the bread winner.

Most positions in social work require that you possess a university diploma or a BA in Social Work. It is usually much quicker to obtain a simple Diploma, which involves a one year program. A full BA degree will take about three years of full-time study in the UK and four years in the US and Canada.

It is also possible to become a social worker with a BSc degree in Occupational Therapy. This course of study will also take approximately three years at a UK university.

Is some cases, you may be able to find work without these educational qualifications. This appears to be the case, for example, in North Lanarkshire, where the council's website notes that in some cases simply having relevant experience may suffice, in conjunction with some basic training. It does, however, appear that in most cases a university level degree in social work is required, especially since 2003, when the General Social Care Council (GSCC) made this a formal requirement for most jobs in the field.

The comment above it wrong! To practice social work in the UK now, you must hold a BA (Hons) Social Work, many employers also look for a Masters also. It is a tough career and you must be psychologically motivated and generally clever.

You need A Levels in Health & Social Care, A*-C's in Mathematics, English & Science, and 3 Other GCSE's ( preferably History, ICT and Business Studies if you want to achieve a lot in this field of work. You need to be non judgemental, thickskinned, Positive, Outgoing and most of all Be prepared for Long hours or some abuse but if you master these abilities, you will go far in life. Ive been a social worker for five years now and I am earning 40,000 a year in Nottingham. Knuckle down and you will be rewarded for all the 4 Year studying at Uni for The GSSC. You also need to be able to drive.
