Hi, I am studying Early Childhood Studies with Psychology and want to become an early years teacher, but not sure if I could strat study PGCE after my degree or do I need to study something else to become a teacher in early years.
It depends on which subject you want to be a teacher of for example if you want to be an english teacher you will have to have a english degree
Teaching is a graduate profession and you are therefore required to
Complete a degree course. The most common route to gaining a qualified
Teacher status (QTS) is via a BEd/BA QTS/BSc QTS degree, which will
Combine both your degree and your teacher training at the same time.
These courses last for 3-4 years depending on the university.
Alternatively you can study for a subject degree (usually 3 years) followed by
a postgraduate teaching course (PGCE – usually lasts 1 year full time or 2
Years part time).
Teacher training courses include practical teaching experience in schools, for
Example on three-year course you will spend at least 24 weeks in schools.
All professionals working with children must be physically fit and hold an
Enhanced certificate of disclosure issued by the Criminal Records Bureau.
