There are a number of requirements for becoming a substitute teacher in New Jersey. First of all, you must possess a New Jersey Teaching certificate that is issued by the State department of education or you should have a valid county substitute certificate. In addition to  this, you must also have proper documentation of Mantoux test, a criminal history review and also verification of Employment Eligibility. For details see the link below:

You do NOT need a teaching certificate in all counties. In Jersey City for example, you must only have 60 credit hours. I am a PhD student doing subbing part time and have no Teaching certificate. you will need to earn a sub certificate which they will give you after you attend their mandatory 3 day training. First step submit your resume to the main office, sub desk....there is also fingerprinting and medical screening required. its 100.00 a day to sub

i don't know what happened to my original comment but I'm not going to type it all over again but basically, you do NOT need a teaching certificate in all counties. It varies by school district but many do not require it, only need 60 college credit hours, medical screening and fingerprinting---Jersey City public schools is ONE example. You Only a sub certificate which you would get after completing their 3 day training. That it!

I am from JC. I am actually an MD and have a few months before residency. Were you able to start subbing right away or did you have to wait until the following school year.
