The objectives of training and development of employees can be many but there are some main areas to consider.

  • Training
Training of an employee can have several objectives. The main goal is to ensure the employee is trained for the position they were hired for. An untrained employee is not going to be effectual in a job. Training also boosts employees motivation and assists in the retention of skills required. One trains employees to be motivated in their work and to retain what they learn so that they cannot make mistakes.

  • Development
This is the next phase after initial training. In the development stage training has already occurred so a trainer knows where the employee may lack in motivation, retention, or training with regards to their job. They can also see what skills the person has that could lead to a better position later on. In development there is another objective and that is to ensure the employee is working at their full potential. Their potential may lead them from being a cashier to being in a management position. In this case the employee is developed by learning skills for a higher level job. One can think of it as continued education towards the betterment of the overall person.

  • Ensuring Effectiveness
Effectiveness is the main goal as mentioned above. In any workplace an effective employee will get the work done that is required within a good amount of time. Something like this is needed to ensure the person is worthwhile to keep in the company. A non productive employee can cost a company money. This is why during the training and development that is ongoing goals are often set for the employee to work towards. They are also put under performance reviews to see if the goals have been reached.
