People use the terms realtor and real estate agent interchangeably, but that is incorrect. Not every real estate agent is a realtor and not every realtor is a real estate agent. There are differences between realtors and real estate agents. They are not the same. Although both must be licensed to sell real estate, the main difference between a real estate agent and a realtor is a realtor is a member of the National Association of realtors.

A real estate agent is someone who’s aware of all the important necessities and factors of buying and selling properties in their state.

Each state requires real estate agents to have a license, which for the most part includes taking real estate classes (online or inhouse) and passing the exam. Real estate agents are employed by a real estate broker and are not allowed to work independently.

A real estate broker is someone who can work independently.

In simple terms, a broker can work on his own, while an agent must work under a licensed broker.
