Nurses need to be compassionate and committed to their patients.
They have to have good communication skills, listening, speaking and writing.
Nurses have to have their patient's best interests at heart and they need to be emotionally stable to deal with good and bad situations which take place in their jobs.

Other than the formal qualifications needed, you have to care and not b afraid to see things that you would never see in day to day life normally, you have to learn to deal with death as you do tend to see this a lot depending on what kind of nursing you go into.
